If It Hadn't Been for the Lord...

I've been very encouraged by the psalm for prayer this week.  Psalm 124 starts off with, "If it had not been the Lord who was on our side..."  The psalm goes on to list a number of dreadful things that would've happened had God not helped his people.  Swallowed alive. Drowned by raging waters. Chewed up.  Yikes!

I have no idea how many times God has protected me from an accident.  I think he did this morning. I was making a left turn at a stop light and about ran over a little girl who was walking to school. She was lost in the blind spot where the door meets the frame that houses my windshield.  I saw her in time enough to slam on the brakes. Barely.

I'm not sure whether she or I were more frightened.  Within milliseconds I burst into a cold sweat wondering what might have happened... had the Lord not been on my side, watching, protecting, guiding, alerting. Short of breath, the first words out of my mouth were "Thank you, Lord."

I don't really know how many countless times God has protected me from physical tragedies, but I do know how often he protects me from the devil's attempt to steal my soul, to disqualify me for eternal life, or to rob me of my inheritance in Christ.  He protects me every time. Every. Single. Time. The devil himself would love to drown me or swallow me, but God is faithful.

I lay my head down on my pillow each night thanking God for his blessings throughout the day. Tonight I will be quick to thank him once again for protecting me and a little girl I may never see again, and I will use that time to thank him once again that my soul is still in his safekeeping.
