Why Study the History of the Church?

Acts 20:17-35

 

1.     We should study the history of the church because we have much to learn from martyrs.

a.     Read Acts 7 and note some characteristics of the church’s first martyr.

b.     Read 2 Timothy 4:1-8 and make some observations on the church’s most famous martyr.

c.      Do you make any attempts to familiarize yourself with modern martyrs of the church?  If so, what resource do you use?

d.     Do you have a favorite "martyr" story from church history?

2.     We should study the history of the church because we have much to learn from the church’s failures over the centuries.

a.     What are the two sources of heresy that the church will face according to Acts 20:28-31?

b.     Which one is more difficult to detect and deal with?

c.      What resources in this passage has God given to his people to protect themselves from heresy.

3.     We should study the history of the church because we have much to learn about the church’s victories over the centuries.

a.     Which people from church history are your personal heroes? Why?

b.     What kind of legacy of victory do you hope to pass down to future generations?

c.     What hope, according to Acts 20:32, do you have of living a victorious Christian life?
