God is in the Ordinary

Psalm 105:1–4 (ESV) - Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!  Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works! Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!  Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!

Dear Laboring Soul,

Do not think that God only shows up in answer to prayer when great things happen.  Neither should you think that he is committed to making things nice and pleasant for you at all times and that when things are difficult he has left your side.  God is always there doing what only He can do.

Notice our Psalm for prayer, the 105th.  God was doing “wondrous works” (v.2) when it seemed as if he were doing nothing (v.12-15).  He was active when he made promises (v.9) and when he sent hardships (v.16ff).  God was performing actions worth talking about when Joseph was in prison and when he was in the palace (v.18-22).

Sometimes his presence seemed astounding and sometimes it seemed ordinary.  But in all of these things, God was doing something great. Rest in his calm and faithful presence. Even then, he is keeping his promises he has made.  He has enfolded you in his everlasting arms and given you shelter under his wings.

If nothing great happened to you today, then praise God for his ordinary work in your life.
