Nothing Wasted

Early this morning, when I rose to spend some time in the Word and prayer, this verse nearly took my breath away.  I know I’ve read it before; but I don’t think I’ve ever noticed it before.

Proverbs 14:9 (ESV) – Fools mock at the guilt offering, but the upright enjoy acceptance.

People may see your life as a total waste, but you understand it differently. What is considered as squandering precious resources to a fool, you see as an expression of joy.  When you take your family to worship with the people of God on Sunday morning, as you give some of your hard-earned money back to God for the use of His church in tithes and offerings, when you restrict yourself from doing what others may be doing with their time or say things that nobody else around you believes – it all looks like such a waste to the fool.

But you see it from God’s perspective.  What is done for Christ, because of Christ, in Christ is not a waste. Rather, even a small cup of water will yield eternal rewards on the day of judgment.  This is because Jesus, who is our acceptance with God, said so.

You may have completely forgotten about all the time, energy, and money you’ve placed into your spiritual growth and into helping others progress along the same path, but God is keeping accurate records.  Jesus Himself makes everything sacred whether it is minute or massive.

You don’t lose joy by giving away your precious temporal resources for the sake of Christ.  Rather, it gives you joy.  A fool looks at the ribeye going up in the flames of the guilt offering and says, “What a waste!”  The believer looks at it and says, “Praise God He’s set an eternal table in front of me with delicacies that nobody’s tastebuds this side of heaven can begin to savor.”

When you’ve been accepted by God, no sacrifice is too great. This is because Jesus, the infinitely valuable sacrifice, has made us acceptable to God. And you enjoy it!
