Romans 12:10 – Outdo one another in showing honor.
If we would only do this. If I would only do this.
If we all had this as our goal, trying our absolute uttermost to show the most honor to each other, what a difference we would make.
I was reading a Christian periodical, and my reading brought this verse to my mind. At first glance, it may seem a little self-defeating. “I showed more honor than YOU did.” But if we’re trying to show honor, we wouldn’t get all wrapped up in worrying about who showed the most honor because that wouldn’t be honorable at all. We would just give it a better shot the next time.
I mean, really, if we would all be committed to this. Can you imagine how much it would impact your marriage? Your parenting? Your friendships? Your neighborhood? Your place of employment?
I remember hearing somebody explain at some point that showing somebody honor is to make him or her feel honored. It is an honest and sincere attempt to make that person sense that you are elated by their presence. What if we did that?
That’s my challenge today. That’s what I’m going to try to do in a few moments when I go to meet Noel and our grandkids. I’m going to try to make them feel like I’m so excited, so overjoyed, so awed, so thankful to see them. I’m going to try to honor them and attempt to outdo whatever attempt they might make to make me feel honored. And then I’m going to do it with the lady at the furniture store as we go and look to purchase a new mattress for my weary bones.
Here’s hoping each of you attempt to do the same and out-honor whomever you might meet tonight.
All for Jesus, that he might receive all the honor ultimately!
